Someone on Goodreads was wondering about the language in the book synopsis which says “He had Disappeared her himself.” So here’s a short explanation:
“To disappear” someone is a term used when authoritarian regimes abduct their opponents, who are then never heard from again. Wikipedia puts it this way: “‘Disappearing’ political rivals is also a way for regimes to engender feelings of complicity in populations. The difficulty of publicly fighting a government that murders in secret can result in widespread pretense that everything is normal, as it did in the Dirty War in Argentina.” I first became familiar with the term in connection with the war in El Salvador in the 1980s.
